Oh what a wonderful trip to the Mill. The children truly enjoyed themselves and learned a lot about how a Mill works. Mr. Dave gave the children a delightful step-by-step guide through the mill process. Each student was given an opportunity to have a completely hands-on experience with seeing how each part of the Mill works. The children understood how the water in the nearby pond was released to help power the large water wheel in the mill. They students saw how the water wheel guided the gears of the big mill machines to help grind the wheat grains into flour. They also got to grind corn from a cob and sift wheat grains in a hand shaker or a hand mortar. Of course the best part of our trip was the actual making of pancakes with our guide. She read a delightful book from Eric Carle called “Pancakes, Pancakes,” which all the children enjoyed. Then she had each child take part in mixing the ingredients and stirring the batter. Like magic the pancakes were ready to taste. Yum Yum! I want to thank all of our wonderful parent volunteers for driving the children to the Anselma Mill. We wouldn’t be able to make this such a successful trip without your support.
