Our class went to the Mill at Anselma last week. In spite of the surprising chilly Spring weather, the children really enjoyed this field trip, particularly the older children who just put on the “The Little Red Hen” for the recent Spring Play. They re-enacted a part of the play where the hen and her chicks planted grains, cut and threshed the wheat, brought them to the mill that got turned into flour, from which bread was baked. This trip showed them how the whole process works in reality. They couldn’t hide their excitement as the guides showed them the materials they used, the water mill, the water source and touching real wheat grains. They even had the chance to grind and sift corn flour. They then helped make pancakes from the flour made from the mill. Many of them really liked the small pancakes they tasted and even asked their parents to make exactly the same ones.
This trip was truly an exciting and interesting one for everybody, including the volunteer parents. Thank you for the parents who spent the morning with all of us. Everybody couldn’t wait for next year’s.
