It doesn’t seem possible that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! The time goes by so quickly and the children are really growing and maturing. It was such a wonderful feeling today watching our new little Amanda put away her own lunch and push her chair under the table. The older girls in our afternoon class have been helping her for a few weeks now. They must feel so good about themselves to know that they taught her how to do the job all by herself!
It’s also satisfying to watch children complete a whole Practical Life activity such as Apple Cutting. This activity may take up to 30 minutes as they think through each step and follow the correct sequence. These food preparations exercises (Apple Cutting, Banana Slicing, Carrot Slicing, Orange Juicing and Sandwich Making) are not “about” the food! They are done for the purpose of helping the children to follow a sequence, concentrate on the activity and feel confident in their work. It develops their independence and gives them the opportunity to share with their friends.
So when your child comes home and tells you everyday that he’s done Apple Slicing…be happy! Your child is growing more and more confident and independent each day!
