That depends on what kind of whale it is! The children have been learning about a variety of animals that live in the ocean. They soon discovered that a baby sperm whale can be 13 feet long at birth. “But how long is 13 feet,” the children wondered. So, by using their math and artist skills, the children created their own models of a sperm whale. They measured 13 feet by using a ruler and a piece of string. Once the string was cut and displayed across the floor, they had to count how many pieces of construction paper they needed to make a long, long, long whale. The whales look wonderful and very unique. Can you find something else in your house that also measures 13 feet? Give it a try and share your discoveries with your child’s class.
