The Elementary class had a wonderful field trip the Great Valley Nature Center last Friday. They learned all about the Lenape Native Americans who lived on the property 500 years ago. They explored the daily life and tools that the Lenape used, and what toys and games children played at that time. They learned about the food the Lenape ate, including what they hunted, gathered, and grew in their gardens, the clothing they made and wore, and the chores the children were responsible for. They also explored a long house built similarly to the houses the Lenape lived in long ago. After lunch, the students participated in hands-on activities that included making a leather pouch, making a corn husk doll, and trying to make fire by rubbing two sticks together. The students enjoyed themselves immensely, some of them saying, “This is the best field trip ever!” It was also a beautiful day to be outside and the fall colors were glorious.
